Heading to college means developing your schedule, not just classes, but also studying, socializing extracurriculars, and meals.
For most students, meal planning is made more accessible by enrolling in an on-campus meal plan, at least for the first year or two of college. But even some upperclassmen find a meal plan helps to have at least some meals on campus between classes. To help students know what to expect from the meal plan offerings at the University of Florida, here’s a rundown of everything you need to know about dining options at UF.
The University of Florida offers a mix of meal plan options to pay for dining hall meals and combo meals at one of Florida Fresh-managed retail locations on campus. The most common plans include a mix of unlimited cafeteria-style meals in the dining halls plus a debit amount that can be used toward food purchases at other food retailers, giving students a blend of food options from cafeteria-style to known favorite fast food spots.
The mix of offerings can get confusing, especially for new students.
Here’s an overview of the terminology and types of offerings you can find in the meal plans at the University of Florida.
The University of Florida offers two types of meal plans, (1) for students living on-campus in a residence hall and (2) for students living off-campus.
On-campus meal plans range from $1,765 to $2,300 per semester, while off-campus plans range from $430 – $880. Each plan varies in its mix of meal swipes, available days, and Flex Bucks. The meal plans available for the 2022-2023 school year at the University of Florida are
Students who live in off-campus housing first choose a Block plan with a set number of meal swipes per week, and then add a Flex option ranging from $200 to $290 for 200 – 300 Flex Bucks to supplement their Block plan.
There are additional options for Greek students living on-campus for flexibility in meals at a fraternity or sorority house and on-campus dining. For more information about Greek-specific plans, visit the Florida Fresh Dining website.
No, students at the University of Florida cannot change their meal plans during the semester.
The Office of Business Services oversees billing for UF meal plans and offers a grace period at the start of each semester for students to cancel or downgrade their meal plan selections. An upgrade to a more costly meal plan can occur anytime. The university does allow for extenuating circumstances – like withdrawing from the university or changing to a Greek plan following rush – but otherwise, students cannot change their plan midway through the semester. If students opt to cancel their plan during the grace period, their account will still be billed for all usage before the cancellation.
For the Spring 2023 semester, the grace period to cancel or downgrade a meal plan is January 13th at 5:00 pm.
Two dining halls at the University of Florida support dining hall meal swipes for those with an unlimited, weekly 10, or block meal plan or who want to use Flex Bucks on cafeteria-style meals. Those two dining halls at UF are:
Yes, the Reitz Student Union at the University of Florida has additional dining options for students, many of which accept retail swipes instead of a dining hall meal. Hours vary by location, with some spots closed on Saturdays and Sundays, so students should check current operating hours before heading to the union for a retail meal.
The ten restaurants inside the Reitz Union are
The closest grocery stores to the University of Florida campus are located in Butler Plaza on the southwest corner of campus along SW Archer Road. This plaza had several student grocery options, including Whole Foods Market, Trader Joes, Aldi, and Publix. There is also a SuperTarget with a grocery store inside and a Sam’s Club for bulk purchases.
The plaza is relatively far from most on-campus residence halls so students would need a car or check the shuttle service, as walking to and from the grocery stores in this location would be difficult.
Our location offers a student-friendly commute to all the student hot spots around campus and the Gainesville community. Walk or bike to more than 150 stores, restaurants, and markets just steps from your new home.
Students interested in an off-campus apartment close to the major grocery stores at the University of Florida have a great option at On20 Apartments.
